We all know how important a search engine is. Without it, then we would have no way of classifying the billions of billions of data that is found in the web. And it will probably take you days or weeks sifting through this data for the things you want to look for. A search engines simplifies all that.
Now what exactly is a search engine? According to Wikipedia, a search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are usually presented in a list of results and are commonly called hits. The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also mine (collect) data available in databases or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.
Search engines are indispensable tools for many users who seek information. They also serve as a filter of sorts that can prevent unwanted data from entering the search engine results page (SERP). In this way, only relevant data is retained and users get the answers they want. Search engines are also the main metrics of SEO in determining a website's performance. This is because search engines, especially the ones employing algorithms, rank different sites according to the relevance, credibility, and functionality they provide. If websites are able to contain the correct and updated keywords, the more likely are they going to be properly indexed by search engines, and the higher the likelihood that they will appear in search engine inquiries.
Search engines also provide a form of service for some interested websites. For a certain fee, they will advertise the websites in their search engine results. In this way, more users would end up clicking on the paying websites instead of the other sites. While this practice is a good way for search engines to earn money, there users who complain that the sites are not relevant to their queries at all. It also defeats the original purpose of search engines, which is to provide fast, efficient, and relevant results for all information needs of users in the internet.
That's why there has been a lot of effort for search engines to redesign their sites to make them more user-friendly. Also, there has been improvements on how pages are classified according to type. We now have search results page, the one with paid advertising with them, and the organic search page, the one that was retrieved using only the search engine's program. The former is for those who are intentionally looking for paid sites, usually for SEO purposes, and the latter is for users who simply wanted information. Which is the very thing people are looking for.
